'On or About 1910': A Digital Edition of the '1910' and '1911' Chapters of Virginia Woolf's The Pargiters
Virginia Woolf's eight-volume holograph draft of her penultimate novel, The Years (1937), has never been published in its entirety. Catalogued under the novel's working title, The Pargiters, the manuscript is held at the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library (Berg Coll MSS Woolf, M.42). To date, only the first one-and-a-half volumes have been edited for publication by Mitchel A. Leaska in The Pargiters: The Novel-Essay Portion of 'The Years' (1978).
This digital transcription makes available the text of two manuscript sections from Volume 4 of The Pargiters, drafted by Woolf between 22 June 1933 and 20 August 1933. These sections were later reworked to become the '1910' and '1911' chapters of The Years. Written over 95 pages in the holograph, this text contains many revisions, additions and deletions. Illegible words are here represented as "[illeg.]". Questionable readings are placed in square brackets with an accompanying question mark "[?]".
This edition is a work in progress. The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Extensible Markup Language (XML) transcription and encoding has been developed by Dr Alice Wood with assistance from Jessica Samuel and Natalia Wadowska. The project is supported by Prof Gabriel Egan, Director of the Centre for Textual Studies at De Montfort University.
